I couldn't help but notice some connections between Grendel and Lord of the Rings.
1. Grendel talks in third person, and also has an alter-ego/dark-side which is the dragon. This reminds me greatly of the monstrous character of Gollum/Smeagol. Both characters are child-like, yet also aggressive and violent. They share the same characteristic of fearing one side of themselves, their dark side. They both appreciate the taste of raw meat. Lastly, both are dynamic characters that undergo a change from innocence to evil.
2. Both books center around humans and war.
3. Grendel calls the setting of this novel "middle-earth", which is also the name of the world that Lord of the Rings is set in.
4. Both novels share similar themes such as time, death and darkness, creatures that look down upon humans, violence, and doing something significant with your short time alive.
I think that, had Grendel met with Gandalf of Lord of the Rings early in the book, he may not have turned into such a terrible monster. I think it would have helped Grendel to hear Gandalf's words, "I will not say do not weep, for not all tears are evil."

Wow! I completely see what you mean! I picked up on the middle-earth reference, but I hadn't noticed all the other parallels before. Grendel really is a sort of Gollum-creature. He may be more bear-like than frog-like, as Gollum is, but I can totally see Grendel slapping a fish (or perhaps a crab in this case) against a rock and singing about "tasty fish". He has that same nigh-insanity that Gollum has; he can think rationally and plot complicated scenarios, but he still talks to himself. Also, neither of them seem to mind putrefaction.
I'm not sure about the dragon though. I saw the dragon as more of a Saruman-type character than as Grendel's alter-ego. Because the dragon is so old and wise and worldly, I thought that he had more of a mentor air about him. But because he seems to lead Grendel down the path of destruction (or at the very least point out to him that he can't escape it), he's too malevolent and sycophantish to really be a mentor character. Therefore, he seemed more like Saruman. Saruman is supposed to be the wisest of the wise and the most powerful and best wizard in Middle-earth; yet still he assists Sauron. Like Saruman, the dragon is wise (but selfish and power hungry) and yet in a roundabout way, evil.
As for other characters, I can't help but think of Theoden (King of the Rohirrim) and Hrothgar. Hrothgar had the same warrior-king personality as Theoden. Both are the leaders of very viking-like societies, both hold great power and would rather keep that power than share it via an alliance with another powerful society, both are rather gruff, and to be honest, both drink a lot of mead.

I think one important difference between Gollum and Grendel is that Gollum's fate is more his own doing than Grendel's. Granted, about halfway through the book, Grendel seems to become more bloodthirsty, but the beginning is significantly different. Gollum began his path towards cruelty and insanity when he murdered Deagol to take the ring. He committed a perfectly unnecessary atrocity, and he suffered for it the rest of his (very long) life. Grendel, on the other hand, began as an innocent creature, gone crazy from extreme solitude (Gollum did the same, but after he turned evil), and he was attacked first because of his being too different and scary-looking. He fought, at first, simply to defend himself from his attackers. He did not begin his descent to violence and madness with an act of cruelty as Gollum did. Gollum turned evil and subsequently went crazy as a result. Grendel's beginning was innocent, but unfortunate, and his innocent insanity preceded unwarranted attacks that led to his increased violence and cruelty. Later in the story, Grendel becomes more of a Gollum-like character as he takes more pleasure in violence and his actions are unjustifiable and cruel. The beginning of his story, however, is more innocent and elicits more sympathy than Gollum's voluntary and unwarranted cruelty.

Thank you Mitra for bringing this up! I kept happening upon many of these same parallels while I was reading and when doing some background research on "Grendel" and "Beowulf" I found something rather interesting that gives this connection/theory some merit. J.R.R. Tolkien is regarded as an influential modern critic of "Beowulf." He wrote a paper about it called "Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics" (here is a link if anyone is interested: www.english.uga.edu/~jdmevans/Personal/JRRT1936.pdf).
While J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" took place in a fantastical land of his own creation, I would imagine it is similar in time and setting to "Grendel"/"Beowulf." I wouldn't doubt that Tolkien's works were influenced by "Beowulf" which would explain the similarities between "The Hobbit"/LOTR and "Grendel."
I agree with Naomi that while Gollum and Grendel share some similarities in terms of their isolation and interactions with humans, the fate vs. freewill/ power of the ring vs. ability to make decisions independent of another entity is a hugely significant difference. I also see the similarities between Hrothgar and the human kings of middle earth. The same greed and hunger for power exists in both.
In terms of the dragon: The dragon in "Grendel" totally reminds me of Smaug in "The Hobbit," not necessarily the whole advice/sway the Gardner's dragon has over Grendel, but the dragon's habits of amassing and guarding treasure, among others, are similar. |
