RACISM

Racism is bad. We can end this thread now. Too reductive? Okay. First off, thank you Amy for giving me a whole new take on a great movie. Heart of Darkness isn’t obviously racist to me. Maybe that’s another white privilege. The book is dense and dated, so I’m not really sure how to criticize. I’ve never traveled into the jungle and met native Africans. Achebe had one section in particular which made me rethink: “But as thought more about the stereotype image, about its grip and pervasiveness, about the willful tenacity with which the West holds it to its heart; when I thought of the West's television and cinema and newspapers, about books read in its schools and out of school, of churches preaching to empty pews about the need to send help to the heathen in Africa, I realized that no easy optimism was possible." The racism in HOD is simply hides in plain sight. We see a man go into completely foreign territory to him, and encounter strange people. We are him. We don’t know anything about the inside the giant kernel Marlow views the world as.
